IVF Process

IVF - In Vitro Fertilization

In Vitro Fertilization is the most effective method of assisted reproduction for infertility treatment.

This process enables couples facing conception problems to increase their chances of natural conception.

IVF is an ideal solution for severe forms of infertility, when other methods, such as insemination (IUI), have not been successful.

01

Ovarian stimulation:

In the first step, hormonal stimulation of the ovaries is performed, which helps multiple eggs to mature. This step is necessary to increase the number of eggs suitable for fertilization. Stimulation usually lasts 10 to 14 days.

02

Egg Retrieval:

Eggs are retrieved from the ovaries under short anesthesia. This procedure takes place at our center and lasts approximately 10-15 minutes. Afterwards, the woman rests and after a few hours can go home with an accompanying person.

Embryo development in the laboratory:

In our modern laboratory, mature eggs are fertilized with sperm from the partner or a donor. The fertilized eggs are cultured in the laboratory for several days so that high-quality embryos develop from them. After this period, we select the best embryos for transfer.

Embryo transfer:

The selected embryo is placed directly into the woman's uterus. This process is painless and quick. No additional hormonal stimulation is needed. Approximately 10 to 14 days after the embryo transfer, a blood pregnancy test is performed to objectively confirm the success of the implantation.

How to support your body during stimulation?

Assisted reproduction treatment has two phases, during which it is recommended to adjust your lifestyle to minimize the risk of complications and feel as good as possible.

Phase 1:
Relaxed regime (from the first menstruation until the first check-up - approximately day 8 of the cycle)

In this phase, you do not need to significantly restrict yourself. A more relaxed regime applies and you can:

  • continue with regular exercise including the gym, yoga, pilates,
  • have sexual intercourse,
  • engage in work, studies, or social life without major restrictions.

Phase 2:

Cautious regime (from the first check-up until embryo transfer or menstruation):

In the second phase of the cycle, it is recommended to take better care of your body and follow some important rules:

  • no physically demanding activities - skip the gym, running, dance, yoga, and pilates.
  • avoid sexual intercourse to prevent the risk of complications.
  • you can go to work, as well as go for walks, to the cinema, or dinner with friends.
  • alcohol and other stimulants are not recommended, but light dancing or social activities are fine - if you feel well
How to prepare for egg retrieval?
  • On the day of retrieval, you must arrive with an internal pre-operative examination
  • Please do not eat or drink from midnight (medications can be taken with a small amount of water)
  • With dentures removed, without chewing gum or other objects in the mouth
  • With contact lenses removed
  • Arrive without jewelry
  • Arrive without makeup
  • Without gel nail polish (one nail on the left hand is sufficient, preferably the index finger)
  • Without use of addictive substances and no smoking before retrieval
  • Shaved genital area

You will be informed about the time and when to arrive for retrieval the day before.

If you are in an IVF cycle, on the day of retrieval you need to know which laboratory methods you wish to use. More information about packages and individual methods can be found HERE.

How to behave after egg retrieval?

After egg retrieval, take it easy for the rest of the day and avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, swimming and sexual intercourse for a short period. Mild cramping, bloating or spotting can be normal.
Most women return to their usual routine, within a few days. Follow your doctor’s individual recommendations and contact the clinic if you experience severe pain, heavy bleeding, fever or significant worsening of symptoms.

  • It is necessary to have someone drive you home - they can pick you up after a short recovery.
  • A rest regime follows for the remainder of the day - the same careful regime that applied during the last days of stimulation - ideally at home, without physical exertion.
  • Drink plenty of water and consume light meals.
How does embryo transfer work?
  • It is a simple, painless procedure, similar to a gynecological examination.
  • It usually takes only a few minutes and does not require anesthesia.
  • The doctor uses a thin catheter to introduce the embryo through the cervix into the uterus under ultrasound guidance.
When is the embryo transfer performed?
  • Most commonly on the 3rd or 5th day after egg fertilization (at the blastocyst stage).
  • The exact day is determined based on the quality and development of the embryos and according to the recommendations of the embryologist and physician.
  • Usually 1 embryo is transferred to reduce the risk of multiple pregnancy.
  • In some cases (e.g. for older patients), 2 embryos may be transferred.
How to behave after embryo transfer?
  • The embryo should implant in the uterine lining.
  • After approximately 10-12 days, the woman takes a pregnancy test or goes for a blood draw to determine the hCG hormone level.

    Our recommendations:
  • According to studies, movement after embryo transfer does not negatively affect its outcome, so you can calmly leave for home immediately.
  • You may use the restroom after 15 minutes have passed.
  • On the day of the procedure, allow yourself to rest - relax more, do not strain yourself.
  • Continue taking medications exactly as instructed by your physician.
  • Waiting for the result may feel endless. Try to occupy your mind with activities that bring you joy.
